flood

If you’re like most South Texans, you are probably feeling helpless in the midst of the tragic stories surrounding us due to area flooding. Here are some ways that you can help:

Donate Goods: If you have extra or unneeded items in your home, offer them up to those in need. Currently there is a need for clothing, linens and blankets, books and toys. Non-perishable foods and even possibly hot meals. Victims can also benefit from first aid items, toiletries and mosquito netting. Be prepared that household items and furniture may not be useful until the victims find a home or can move back into their current home.

Donate Blood: If there is a blood drive in your area and you meet the health requirements, please consider becoming a donor.

Donate Time: Some employers allow their employees to donate unused sick or personal leave time to help their community. Contact your Human Resources Representative to see if your company would allow this. If travel to the area is safe, check with aid organizations to see if they need on site volunteers.

Aid organizations need help off-site as well. Contact local aid organizations to see how you can help in their collection efforts. You could also become a liaison in a call center or donation processing area.

Donate Professional Services: Your expertise and talents may be a great resource for those in need.

Donate Shelter: Displaced people need a safe place to stay while their affairs are sorted out. If you have the space, consider inviting victims into your home.

Donate Spiritual Support: In the face of disaster, people turn to their religion and beliefs for comfort and support. Check to see how your church or temple may be reaching out.

Together we can help those in need and strengthen our community.
