Summer is heating up and the kids are out of school. It’s time for vacation plans, long weekends and time outside. Not so fast. Summertime often brings increases in some criminal activity that could put you and your family in danger. With the kids out of school it’s important that they stay with a trusted family friend or in an established care facility. If they stay at home alone for any length of time, it’s important to teach them to only answer the door to trusted adults only, never to strangers. Make sure all doors stay locked and encourage them to stay inside if they’re home alone. Make sure teens are home at a reasonable time and make sure to check in with your teen while they spend time with friends. If your kids have cellphones, this is a great way to keep in touch with them while you’re at work or away from home: a simple text is a great way to check in.

Going on the family summer vacation? Make sure you have a close family friend or trusted neighbor to check on your home. If you have someone already feeding your pets, even better: seeing people coming in and out of the home will deter would be burglars. Let other family members know where you’re going and when you’re expected to return. Keep all travel and medical documents nearby in case of emergency.

Heading down to the ocean or other beach? Keep an eye on your valuables. Stay together and don’t let kids wander too far. Stay in well-populated areas and avoid remote or off the beaten path locations.

If you commute or travel using public transportation, a little common sense goes a long way. With students, tourists and fellow commuters adding to your bus trip: keep an eye on your belongings, make sure they stay close to you. If you see any suspicious behavior: alert your bus driver. Park your car in well-lit and well-traveled areas that would scare off potential car thieves.

Staying safe this summer shouldn’t be a hassle and these tips will help you and your family enjoy your summer. Whether it’s a drive to the beach or a backyard barbecue, stay safe and remember, the men and women in blue are always there for you.
