“When a police officer is killed, it’s not an agency that loses an officer, it’s an entire nation.”
-Chris Cosgriff, OMDP (Officer Down Memorial Page) Founder
During the holiday season, as we surround ourselves with family, friends, traditions and merriment, we may also experience a painful reminder of those we loved who are no longer with us. Despite zip code, education, religious affiliation and socio-economic differences, there is one thing we all have in common . . . every family will experience their own sadness, tragedies, and losses at times.
When a police officer is killed, especially in the line of duty, it is the entire community that mourns along with the officer’s family and Department. In the United States alone there has been 114 Line of Duty deaths thus far in 2014. There were three deaths just last week in the states of Florida and New York. Police Officer Organizations across the country mourn for each other. They are a brethren of support and community no matter how many miles separate them.
Last week San Antonio commemorated the one year anniversary of Fallen Officer, Robert Deckard. Officer Deckard died two weeks after being shot in the head during an altercation. A father of two and a seven-year-veteran of the police force, he was only 31 years old.
Our community continues to join the San Antonio Police in their grief and prays for the safety and comfort for those that protect our city. Not just at the holidays, but all year round.
You have our back.
And we have yours.
Peace to our Officers and their families this season and throughout 2015!
