Statement from San Antonio Police Officers Association On Sentencing of the Killer of Officer Robert Deckard

Shawn Puente - Killer of Officer Deckard

While we are pleased for the sake of the family of Officer Robert Deckard that this chapter of their terrible ordeal is now over, it is unfortunate that the jury did not see fit to render the death penalty as punishment for this heinous crime.

If there was ever a perpetrator who deserved to receive the death penalty, it is Shaun Puente, a vicious serial robber, who also has long history of violence against women, and who shot and killed Officer Robert Deckard on December 8, 2013. We fail to see what more the jury needed to deliver the ultimate punishment, but we hope that future juries understand that the killing of a Police Officer is an affront to every citizen, and an attack on us all that should be punished to the maximum extent of the law.

The men and women of the San Antonio Police Officers Association extend their sympathy and support to the family and friends of Officer Robert Deckard, who was a loving husband, father of two, and seven-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department.

I am in shock, this piece of garbage gets to benefit from us, the tax payers for the rest of his life. It really should not shock me though with the way a lot of our society has turned against law enforcement. All I can hope is that another inmate in TDC treats him like the piece of shit he is. All I can say is, I’m sorry to the Deckard family for all that has happened.. God bless and live strong.

Are you kidding me? Look at the videotape. There is no doubt that he knew exactly what he was doing. What is an officer’s life worth?

This shows that people don’t care about the lives and families of law enforcement officers.

What a shocker. This ass**** took the life of an officer doing his job and gets to sit in prison for the rest of his life on tax payer expense! No wonder this world has turned on law enforcement, society knows if a cop is killed, they have a good chance of dodging the death penalty! What more evidence/proof do you need to give this evil piece of shit the death penalty? This is a slap in the face to us all. I feel for the Deckard family, and pray god helps with the pain they have suffered.

Evil truly exists in this world and someday Puente will have to face GOD for what he did.

Another slap in the face to law enforcement. This is Texas, not California. With that said, SAPOA officers are always around to answer the call should anyone in San Antonio need us. We’re always around.I pray for the Deckard family and know that while Bobby is gone, your brother’s in blue will always be here.

I believe it was a hung jury because of one juror who could not decide on the death penalty punishment. The rest of the jurors had voted for capital punishment. Therefore the life sentence. What a shame!
