San Antonio school districts currently serve over 300,000 students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. In anticipation of the upcoming school year, some local families are struggling to make ends meet and purchase essential school supplies for their children. In an effort to address these needs, the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association’s nonprofit, Blue Cares, has been working tirelessly to distribute more than 1,000 backpacks with necessary supplies for disadvantaged students.
Through this initiative, Blue Cares along with SAPOA’s political action committee, realized school supplies were not the only essential items these students lacked. For many of us, access to everyday hygiene products is not a main concern, but for some families it creates an additional financial strain.
Blue Cares has expanded their community outreach efforts through the “We Care Kit” program, an initiative that aims to collect new full-sized hygiene products throughout the year for local high school students in need. “We Care Kits” include basic hygiene products such as deodorant, feminine hygiene products, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, plus much more. The need for these items continues to grow as we conduct our outreach efforts to local school district partners and faith-based community organizations.
