Police Officers aren’t always all they’re cracked up to be.  They are more.  Generous, kind, helpful and protective.  Lately, law enforcement has been getting a bad rap as the media highlights disappointing stories that are truly the exception to the rule when it comes to the general attitude of some officers.  Well, don’t let one rotten apple spoil the bunch as the old saying goes.  The San Antonio Police Officers’ Association wants to highlight how those in blue really do care for those in need.  Not just through our own local “Blue Cares” outreach program, but including those officers near and far.  They are a true inspiration.

Recently in Harris County Precinct 4 (The Greater Houston Area), there were a couple of deputies doing their job, keeping watch when they happened upon a homeless man begging for money from motorists at a very busy intersection.  Defeated and down on his luck, the man was trying to acquire enough money to get back to his home in Seattle, Washington.

One of the officers calmly grabbed a $100 bill from his patrol car and generously gave it to the man so that he could buy a ticket back to Washington.  The man was grateful and, is hopefully, now home and able to build his life again.

This deputy went above and beyond the call of duty to help his fellow man, to protect this citizen, even if it cost him money out of his own pocket.  The constable caught wind of this act of kindness and commended the deputy, going as far as putting a letter of commendation in the officer’s personal file.  But the deputy did not do what he did for personal gain.
“This is a perfect illustration of compassion by your police,” said Constable Mark Herman. “Good does happen with law enforcement doing their jobs.”

We salute those officers who go above and beyond the call of duty to uphold their vows of protection for all citizens, proving that in fact, “Blue” does “Care.”
