A special Valentine Facebook post originating from Hardin County, Northwest of Beaumont, Texas, has hearts swelling and hopefully, some folks looking at police officers in a whole new light.

It all began when an elderly man who had not driven his car in years decided he needed to get behind the wheel and go out to get a Valentine, a small box of chocolates, for his wife of fifty-nine years.  As the man was shopping, the store owner noticed him and was worried about him getting back behind the wheel.  Concerned for his safety and the safety of others, the store owner made a call to the police department for what is called a welfare check for reckless driving on the gentleman.

Deputy Donnie Wayne Gulley responded to the call and when he arrived at the store to investigate and take down the details, he decided that a small box of chocolates just would not suffice as a Valentine gift for a marriage that has lasted almost sixty years. He and several other shoppers put together a beautiful Valentine basket of treats for the couple. And the seventy-nine year old Romeo got a personal ride home and was able to deliver the basket of goodies to his bride.

This heartwarming story is just another example of how many times first responders go above and beyond the call of duty to make life happier and safer for the citizens that they protect. Thank you, Deputy Gulley, for reminding us that love extends beyond those that are young and that commitment and marriage of such magnitude should be respected and honored.

And thank you to all of the citizens that helped Deputy Gulley by donating to the basket and showing your community that paying it forward can make a difference in so many people’s lives.
